FAQ
Here you can find our most frequently asked questions and answers.  If your question is not listed, please feel free to contact us with your question!

Q: What is all included with my lessons?
A: You get 4-5 lessons a month, a teacher with a Master's Degree in Music Education or Performance, FREE recitals (with CD), FREE Rock Band 101, FREE music copies, FREE practice CD's, FREE ensembles, FREE concerts, and FREE special topic music lectures!

Q: I'm not sure if I will like music though, can I have a free lesson?
A: Yes!  Here at the Engel School of Music we offer a "Have one on the House" program.  It's basically a free lesson and advice about playing the instrument that you choose.

Q: What kind of guitar should I buy for lessons?
A: The best answer is the one that will make you pick it up and play it.  In other words, if you like the red guitar, but the black one is $20.00 cheaper....buy the red one.  Even though the black one is cheaper, if you are uninspired to play it, you would be better off mentally buying the red one because its color motivates you to play it.  I prefer that students start on either a classical guitar, or an acoustic guitar.  It builds better hand strength, stronger finger calluses, and is completely mobile!

Q: What about the different types of guitar?
A: CLASSICAL GUITAR:  If you want to play classical music and beyond, you should buy a classical guitar.  Even though you can play classical music on other guitars, the classical guitar is much better suited to play it.  The classical guitar is also the best choice for anyone interested in pursuing a music degree in guitar.  The classical guitar has nylon strings and a wider neck to accomidate all the demands of classical guitar playing, and is played it with your fingers.

ACOUSTIC GUITAR:  If you want the ability to play with a plectrum (a pick), a thiner neck then a classical guitar, and a larger body - you should buy an acoustic guitar.  The acoustic guitar comes in many different shapes and sizes, and is ment to give a louder, more brash sound.  It has steel strings, and larger body to develope more sound.  They can be played with a plectrum or fingers, but it is much more difficult to play advanced classical guitar music on them.

ELECTRIC GUITAR:  If you want to rock, play with a pick, and have lots of distortion - then you should buy an electric guitar.  The electric guitar is the easiest to play, due to it having the smallest gage strings and lowest playing action, and is available in many different shapes, sizes and colors.  However, the electric guitar requires the most accessories to play it including: an amplifier, instrument cable, power outlet, and in most cases a strap due to the shape of the guitar.  Electric guitars are primarily played with a pick, but can be played with fingers.

Q: What brand of guitar do you recommend?
